Folk Traditions of Gujarat

Garba and Raas are two folk dance forms that are synonymous with Gujarat. Due to its association with the fertility cult, Garba is practiced by women, whereas Raas is restricted to men. Traditionally, these dances are performed during the festival of Navratri. Both forms involve bending and arms swinging at every step, each movement ending either in claps (tali) as in Garba, or striking of sticks (dandiya) as in Raas. Pagrav, a dance company from Ahmedabad, will present several Garba items with traditional fervour and flavour. This will be followed by Raas, presented by Amardeepsinh Jadeja?s group from Jamnagar.

'One on One' is a theatrical collaboration of Shernaz Patel, Rajit Kapur and Rahul da Cunha, collectively known as Rage. In this unusual theatrical event, several of Mumbai's leading playwrights have written short 10 to 15 minute monologues, or in some cases, dualogues. The theme for the evening is INDIA TODAY wherein, each writer is addressing an issue/subject/theme about our country, both hilarious and tragic - the legalisation of homosexuality, the state of the Indian bureaucracy, the farce of Ajmal Kasab`s trial, the absurd popularity of BIG BOSS, the obsession with skin fairness, the decline of Mumbai city, etc. Note: Two shows with interval

 

Tontrio - Western Music

Tontrio is a young prize winning piano trio of Julia Kraus (piano), Karlotta Schmied (violin) and Daniel Haverkamp (cello). It was founded in 2006 at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe, originally with the violinist Eva Maria Vischi. Since 2010, they play in their current cast and present a repertoire that ranges from the classical through contemporary eras.

Join in the talk on, Explosions in the Cosmos- The Life and Death of Stars by Sayan Chakraborti, a research scholar in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. He'll outline the history of observations of the explosions between Supernovae and Gamma Ray bursts in the cosmos and humanity's attempts at making sense of such amazing events. The speaker will discuss the short but brilliant careers of such massive stars and also try to make sense of the interaction between Supernovae and the matter around their parent stars.
